CARBON-FREE VOTING KICKS OFF IN CALIFORNIA
State's first 100% green vote-by-mail campaign launched

SACRAMENTO – Carbon Free Voting 2008, a project of EdVoice, announced it has kicked off the first Zero Carbon, vote-by-mail campaign in California history. California voters will begin receiving mailers from the Carbon Free Voting project today encouraging them to cast their ballots by mail in the February 5, 2008 Presidential Primary.

Carbon Free Voting 2008 is dedicated to providing resources that will allow voters to vote by mail, rather than by car, thus reducing emissions that contribute to global warming.

“This is the first carbon free campaign in the country,” said environmental champion and former state legislator Fran Pavley. “I am proud that EdVoice and the Carbon Free Voting project are taking such an innovative approach to protecting our votes and our planet. Carbon Free Voting is good for Democracy and good for the Environment.”

The Carbon Free Voting project is paying carbon offsets for all the mail-pieces they send out and is paying the carbon offsets for any voter who participates in the program. The project is working with CarbonFund and TerraPass to balance campaign emissions.

Carbon Free Voting 2008 also adheres to the highest environmental standards in the printing and production of its mailpieces. The mailers use recycled paper, are designed in a green studio, and are certified at the high FSC standard.

Voters can also take advantage of the program by visiting www.carbonfreevoting.com. Carbon Free Voting 2008 will also communicate with voters by e-mail and by phone.

The Carbon Free Voting program is designed to increase voter participation in the 2008 primary election. By targeting environmental voters who are highly engaged in a key public policy issue, the sponsor of the program, EdVoice, believes the program will also increase turnout among voters who support education.
